FAQ

When will it be released?

When it’s finished. (We have no idea)

Why a game about ponies? Why not make up your own characters?

Because fangames make recruiting people and promoting a project so much easier.

Why a kart game? Why not some other type of game?

Good question! There isn’t really a specific reason why we chose to do a kart game except “why not?” – there were also a couple different pony kart game projects going on at one point, so we all merged together.

Why are they riding in vehicles? Why don’t they just run around instead?

Firstly you wouldn’t be able to have anything like drifting. Secondly, how would you even balance that? How could you make sure a character who can fly faster than the speed of sound has an equal chance of winning as a character who’s scared of her own shadow? You couldn’t. The karts serve as a sort of “equalizer” to make sure the characters are all “fair”. No wings and no magic.

What are the system requirements?

Unfortunately the graphics engine we’re using only runs on windows, sorry mac and *nix users! In terms of hardware though, there’s a whole bunch of settings you can change to get the performance you want, so hopefully performance shouldn’t be an issue!

What is Ponykart made in?

Ponykart is being made in C# with Ogre3D, Bullet, IrrKlang, and Lua.

Can I help contribute?

Check our join page to see if we have any open positions. If we don’t have anything open right now, keep an eye on our news updates!

I have a great idea that I think you guys would like!

That’s great, but chances are we’ve heard it before! We don’t want ideas or suggestions emailed to us, but you can always post them in the comments of a news post or on our ponychan thread.

What characters and places will the game have?

At the moment we’re only going to do the mane 6 and four tracks, just to keep things simple so we have a good goal. Only after that will we even begin to think about other characters or tracks.

The tracks will be locations from the show and the characters will all be from the show too. All of the characters will be ones who have at least been important to an episode and had speaking lines. Yes this means you will not be able to play as background ponies, but you’ll still see them!

What tracks will there be?

The current four are Sweet Apple Acres, Whitetail Woods, Appleoosa, and a track where you ride on top of some trains!

Will there be items?

Of course, you can’t have a kart game without items! We’re still working on the mechanics of the items and how they should work – are they completely random, do you get an item based on what place you are, or are there different item types that you can pick from? We’re working on it!

Will there be different karts to choose from for each character?

Maybe eventually, we’ll see.

Are the tracks lap-based or from A to B?

Most of them will be lap based but there will be a few A-to-B’s sprinkled in here and there.

Will there be multiplayer?

Yes, eventually!

Will there be a character creator so I can play as my original character do not steal?

No.

Can I help test the game?

Almost all of the bugs we end up finding ourselves, but Ponykart is open source so you’re free to download and compile it yourself.

Can I make my own screenshots and videos of Ponykart and post them to various sites?

We’d prefer if you didn’t, but if you really need to, please only use what’s in the /tags/ folder and not the main trunk – we don’t really want people seeing half-finished levels before we announce them ourselves because they usually look quite ugly! If you do make screenshots/videos of stuff we’ve already shown off, just make sure you provide a link to us and don’t upload a build anywhere!

I have a question that you haven’t answered here! What do I do?

Send us an email!
